Rooftoppers is amazing! All of the children have been enthralled by the text and have loved learning about and exploring the characters of Sophie, Charles, Matteo and Miss Elliot. This has led to amazing writing from our Year 6s. They produced a powerful debate about who the best guardian for Sophie would be – most voted for Charles as our hero! We were so engrossed in the text that we wanted a question answered – what happened before the story and what happened after? We explored what a prequel and a sequel is and then used our investigative reading skills to plan out what would have happened before – the ship sank, Charles was onboard, Vivienne had no choice – and then planned out what would have happened after – Sophie’s reunion with Vivienne. The writing produced was incredible. Well done Year 6! We next used our knowledge of our Geography unit to write a letter to Sir Keir Starmer to ask him to re-think the way that we use resources and what we could do to help the planet. Next up, the Boy in Striped Pyjamas!
Geography
Are we damaging our world? Yes! Year 6 have been looking at the damage caused by humans to our world. We started off by heading out and about into our local area to see what the damage was – so much litter in terms of plastic pollution – and then looked at the other causes, such as air pollution and noise pollution. We then looked at the wider issues in our world – plastic pollution in our seas, global warming, over-fishing and deforestation. Our energy must come from somewhere so… where? We looked at the sources of energy that we have in our world and whether they are renewable energy sources or non-renewable energy sources. Renewable sources are wind energy, solar energy and hydropower to name a few. We worked out that solar energy would be the best for Meir! Being a sustainable person in the world is everything that will help protect our planet, keep our planet functioning and make the world a better place for the future.
Maths
Wow! We have had a busy first few weeks in Year 6! Throughout, we have shown that we have been building upon our learning and that we are all excellent mathematicians. We have taken on everything that being a Year 6 mathematician can throw at us: addition, subtraction, all forms of multiplication and division, decimals and fractions – you name it, we’ve smashed it! We love Maths in Year 6 and can’t wait to carry on progressing and being strong mathematicians!
Out and About – look out Meir we’re in your area!
We headed out and about around our local area during this unit to take on some Geography fieldwork in an area we know very well. It was very interesting to see our immediate environment in a different light!
Stanley Head
We had a fantastic time at Stanley Head. We worked as a Year 6 team at all times to ensure that we all had the best time. Words can not describe what we did so check out all of our photos!
Science
In an immersive exploration of the wonders of the human body, we researched into the intricate workings of the circulatory system, discovering the indispensable role of blood in sustaining life. Through hands-on experiments and engaging discussions, we uncovered the importance of exercise, balanced nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices in optimizing physical well-being. Deepening our understanding, we took on a simple yet interesting (and some mentioned the word ‘disgusting’) task of dissecting pig hearts to gain insights into the mechanics of the human heart. With awe and curiosity, we explored the chambers, valves, and intricate networks of blood vessels, unraveling the mysteries of cardiac function. More than one of us wasn’t happy to take this on but still got involved and learnt so much! We eventually moved on to looking at classification and how we can understand the key characteristics of living things. We created classification keys during the start of this unit. PE
We have a great number of athletes in Year 6 and they are ready to show their skills! We have been honing the skills that we learnt in Year 4 and 5 when playing being dancers this year. Last year, we created dances together and this year, we have been adding new moves to our repertoire! New skills have been added to our learning too. We have been learning about handball and the rules and regulations that allow the sport to work. Many of the skills that we have learnt before when using hand-eye co-ordination have helped us will this sport and we have loved it! Many of the conversations that we have had around Science has led to us understanding more about our bodies and applying them in PE.
PSHE, SMSC and RE
Applying all of our learning into every subject is something that we always do at Crescent! In PSHE, we have been learning how we can lead and healthy and happy lifestyle – this links to Science and PE. We have been looking at how to break unhealthy habits – such as lack of sleep, poor diet and negative mental feeling. We have looked at the wider issue of positive and negative drugs – linking to our Science unit – and how to avoid negative drugs. Finally, we have importantly looked into what a support network is and how relationships that are positive and negative can have an impact on us. In RE, we have been studying Hinduism and the constructs and beliefs around this religion. We discovered that there are many people of the Hindu belief in Britain and that they believe in a different religious model to others. Moksha, Dharma, Samsara and Karma were all explored.
Art
In Art, we delved into the captivating world of Surrealism, a revolutionary artistic movement that challenged conventions and explored the depths of the subconscious mind. At the heart of our exploration stood the enigmatic figure of Salvador Dalí, a master of the surreal, whose eccentric creations continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Through studying Dalí’s iconic works, such as “The Persistence of Memory,” students were transported into dreamlike landscapes where time seemed to melt away and reality blurred with imagination. Through our exploration of Dalí and Surrealism, we not only honed their artistic skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for the power of imagination and the boundless possibilities of creative expression. We loved creating our own ‘Surrealist’ piece of art!
