Geography
As part of our Geography topic about Earthquakes and Volcanoes, “How do Tectonic hazards affect us?”, the children have delved in to how hazards can affect human life. They have understood how the movement of tectonic plates can cause earthquakes and even cause volcanic eruptions. As part of their homework, the children created some amazing volcanoes and we set off eruptions back in school. When we erupted their volcanos, the children were able to specify whether the volcanos they created were active or dormant. 10,000 years for it to be classified as dormant! Thank you to all of our parents and carers for helping our children to make these brilliant creations.
VR Experience – Volcanos and Science
At Crescent, we usually take the children to the exact places that bring the learning to life, however, it was not possible to take the children to Italy to experience Mount Vesuvius so we thought the next best thing would be to give the children a virtual reality experience. They all put on their VR headsets, toured world famous volcanoes, and even experienced what it would be like during a volcanic eruption. As you can see from the photographs, the children loved this experience! At the same time, the children were able to explore different habitats of living things throughout the world. Another experience for them linked to our Science topic of “Can living things survive anywhere?”
English
The children have loved to use our Love for Reading text (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) to get creative with our writing. They have used the sorting hat, Great Hall and Hagrid to name a few as inspiration for their writing. At the very end, we wanted to use all of our learning from the last 10 weeks to write our story based on a video called ‘Alma’. The children blew us away with how descriptive their stories were! Conjunctions, similes, relative clauses, expanded noun phrases…they have proven they can include everything! Superstars!!
Maths
The children have worked so hard over the last 10 weeks on embedding their knowledge of place value and developing their written calculation methods. This is on top of spending a lot of time on improving their times table fluency (big test coming up in June!). We have spent last half term on developing the 9 times table fluency and it’s time for 7 times table in Autumn 2. Mr Engleman has come up with another Oasis song linked to the 7s. We have also learnt how to find the perimeter and area of shapes – take a look at us in action:
Art
We used the famous artist, Paul Cezanne, to provide us with inspiration of how to get creative with FRUIT!! The children looked at his art, and how he would create his paintings. We looked in to different media (oil pastels, chalk, watercolour, charcoal) and how we could use them to replicate our own Paul Cezanne art. Not only this, but we decided to turn our drawings of fruit in to 3D reality. We used felt and learnt how to stitch it together to bring our fruit to life!
SMSC Days – # Influencer day & Celebration of the nations day
During our two SMSC Days, we celebrated influential musicians throughout the school and Year 4, of course, focused on Oasis. We wrote inspirational speeches using Oasis song titles and also practised our times table songs. Furthermore, we all created a piece of Oasis art inspired by Andy Warhol and we can’t wait to see our Year 4 Oasis art displayed in school.
Our second SMSC Day, was focused all around ‘Celebrating the Nations’ of the world. for us in Year 4, it was the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. This is a celebration of different cultures and diversity within Brazil. However, it has a wider reaching message and the Year 4 children loved immersing themselves in to this experience. We even learnt how to Samba dance.
Music
Over the last 10 weeks, Year 4 children have been experimenting with rhythmic choices, where they have been following beats and even making their own as a small group. Each child had a part to play from the conductor to performing their own beat. We have looked at musical note and explored how a semibreve, minim and a crotchet last for different lengths of time. Of course, we have also been linking music to our times tables focus through Oasis. Next up, practising Christmas songs for the festive concert!
