Liverpool Museum
We journeyed up the motorway to Liverpool to visit the museum for an exciting and thrilling day out. We discovered everything we needed to know about the Ancient Egyptians. We saw artefacts from thousands of years ago, found out how important the River Nile was to this civilisation and even had a go at mummifying a body! Can you believe that we even saw an actual mummy? Amazing!
History – Why are the Early Civilisations Important to Us?
We have really enjoyed learning about Ancient Civilisation (Ancient Egyptians Indus Valley, Shang Dynasty, Ancient Sumer and The Mayans). We have looked at how they lived and how they compared to what was happening in British History at the time. We started our learning looking at the different artefacts from the different periods and put them on a timeline. We found out how the different civilisations began structuring cities, irrigation and farming. All of which we have now. We discovered how trade works and even had a go at trading ourselves. The Ancient Egyptians fascinated us – we learned all about hieroglyphics and mummification and we even had a go at it ourselves on our visit to Liverpool Museum!
English
Our love of reading book has been “A Place Called Perfect”. The story of a ‘Violet’ and how when she arrives in Perfect with her family strange and mysterious things start to happen. We discovered that all was not well in Perfect! Imagine what it would be like to wake up not able to see? Well we used this to write diaries from different perspectives. Tea is the drink of choice in Perfect which led us to the question “Are you a dunker?” We had lots of fun dunking biscuits into our tea, collecting words and using them to write a balanced argument to help us decide if it is best to dunk biscuits in tea or not!
Maths
We have put in a lot of effort to make sure that we can calculate using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We can do these really well now and we can apply them to solve real life problems, we are really good at making up our own word problems to show that we understand the processes and language involved. We learned all about mass/weight and length and practised converting between these units. After we had mastered those skills we put them into practise by estimating the lengths of objects, measuring them accurately and then converting them to a different unit. We did the same with weight, carefully placing objects on scales and reading them accurately. Of course, we are becoming more accurate with our times tables and spend as much time as possible learning the facts so that we know them really well.
Science – How Do Teeth Start The Journey Of Digestion?
This was a fun topic that we really got our “teeth” into! We know that we have different types of teeth and that they have different functions. We know that Carnivores have large canines so that they can rip and tear their food. We know that herbivores have very large molars to chew and grind down vegetation. We also know how important it is to look after our teeth. We chewed some tablets to show up the plaque so we know that if we brush our teeth well and eat a healthy diet with low sugar then our teeth will stay strong. We investigated the different drinks that might affect our teeth, the eggs that we used to represent our teeth were very damaged after a week! We all got really messy when we demonstrated the journey of digestion using a pair of tights!
Design and Technology
We have become engineers this term discovering how levers and linkages create movement. We experiment with different types of levers to make different types of movement. Linear and Oscillating were the structures we focussed on and fixed and loose pivots showed us how they would fit together. We put them straight to use by creating our own book. We collaborated in teams to create a page that included moving parts. We were very proud of the book that we created at the end!
