We started our new topic with a surprise when we left our classroom. We discovered 3 golden eggs amongst the smoke and glitter. We carefully took these eggs back to our classrooms and looked after them…..what was going to hatch from them? We didn’t know, we predicted a giant chicken, a dinosaur and a mermaid. As we waited patiently we explored our class text ‘Tell me a dragon’ the beautiful pictures and words supported us as we wrote about our own dragons. We used the talk for writing structure to help us create wonderful imaginative pieces of writing and poetry.
We waited patiently and worked hard and out hatched a beautiful dragon of our very own. Each class took a vote and decided on the name of their dragon!
Maths
In Maths we have worked hard to add, subtract, divide and multiply numbers to 100. We found out how to record calculations using the column method. We have found out about time through the days of the week, months of the year and can now read a clock using o’clock, half past and quarter past.
We also looked at what else we can measure – we measured liquid- this is called capacity, how heavy things are- this is called weight and how long/tall things are- this is called length. We loved the practical parts of these lessons and got very good at predicting too!
Science
Our topics this time have had us finding out about the needs of animals- animals need air, water, shelter, food and a suitable habitat. We know that a polar bear would not thrive in a dessert and a camel would struggle in the Arctic.
Geography
What famous landmarks can we visit in Stoke On Trent? was our opening question for our Geography topic, this then led us to think about landmarks around the UK and then we travelled across the water to Egypt where we looked at how Egypt compares and differs to Stoke On Trent.
We even had one of our friends visit Cairo and confirm that what we had found out was correct!
We can now name the capital cities of the UK, some of the famous rivers and mountains in the UK and talk about the features of a river and a mountain.
RE
We have enjoyed finding out about another religion in RE this topic. We found out all about Islam and what happens in a mosque and what special artefacts we might find there.
PE
We have covered so much in PE but our favourite things have been our gymnastics unit looking at making shapes with our body and learning how to create a tuck, pike and straddle shape.
We have also practiced our hockey and basketball skills- some of us even managed to throw the basket ball in the hoop!
PSHE
PSHE has been so much fun this topic. We have thought about the word ‘risk’ and talked about healthy and unhealthy risks. Crossing the road is a healthy risk as we have to do it but it could be dangerous. Smoking is an unhealthy risk as we don’t need to do it and it is bad for our health.
We also decided that it was a healthy risk to go swimming- we then created posters about the rules and risks for our school swimming pool.
We refreshed our memory about internet safety- we found our school display and created information for others to read about how to stay safe on the internet.
Music
Our music lessons have been great fun as usual and we have focused on how music makes us feel. We drew the emotions we felt from listening to music, drew lines and shapes to show the change in the music and wrote adjectives to describe the music.
The fire service
We were very lucky to have a visit form the fire service. They spent the morning with us talking about fire safety, having a plan of how to escape your home in a fire and we looked at what fire people wear to protect themselves from fire.
We also got to visit the fire engine and see all the amazing equipment that the fire service use to save people. We all got to sit in it and of course hear the sirens!
Dressing up!
We have had lots of opportunities to dress up this term. We dressed up as our favourite character from a book we have looked at in school, wore our PJ’s for Pancreatic cancer and wore our best Easter bonnets for the parade.
Design and technology
We have been learning some new skills in DT- cutting, peeling, slicing and grating. We used these skills to make fruit kebabs and coleslaw and of course we used our design skills to design the best product, make it and then evaluate what we did.
