Llandudno Trip
FISH AND CHIPS BY THE SEASIDE!
We had such an amazing time in Llandudno! We visited the famous pier and took in the sights of the Great Orme as we ventured up to the very top on the tram. First though, we paid a visit to the Bronze Age Mines. We even went underground to the very place where Bronze Age man mined for copper so that they could smelt it with tin to make the hard metal Bronze. After a trip to the top to take in the scenic sights, we rode the tram back down. We had fish and chips on the West Shore and we were treated to a story from Mr Clewes. After a night in the hostel, we took the train to Conwy for more ice cream and a trip into the smallest house in Britain. It was definitely very small!
Geography – Do we like to be beside the seaside?
During our final Geography topic of the year, we discovered that being in the Midlands we are in fact in a good position to visit the East, West and South coasts. We discovered all the sights to be seen at the seaside. We would expect to find activities to entertain like boat rides, long relaxing walks, sandy beaches and hundreds of hotels for visitors to stay in. We did of course experience all of these on our trip to Llandudno but we also discovered that it has a lot in common with the Amalfi Coast! Even some of the hotels were the same colour. maybe one day we will travel to Italy to find out what it would be like first hand. We also looked at some of the physical features found along our coasts. Sea cracks turn into sea caves, which turn into arches and stacks before falling into the sea to leave behind sea stumps. We made our own versions of these from Lego and then presented our creations to our class mates. It was interesting to find out that Global Warming is speeding up the erosion process on our coastlines. We must do something about this! We ended our topic by using our knowledge and skills to redevelop Rhyl. Putting our map skills in action, we designed what it could look like in the future, returning it to its former glory!
Design and Technology
Learning how to create a healthy balanced meal was on the menu this term! Earlier in the year, we found out how important Carbohydrates, Proteins and Vitamins and Minerals are to our bodies. We mastered the claw and bridge technique so that we could cut safely and refined our grating skills. Next up, we designed our own meals and decided on the food we would create for our picnic. Entirely vegetarian and packed full of goodness, we made Quorn wraps, a healthy salad and fruit cocktails for dessert. Yum!
English
Adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions have been practised and embedded in our writing this term. Since our book has been “Alice in Wonderland”, we have based our writing on this. We read the Jabberwocky and read about the mythical creatures that Alice discovered in Wonderland. The Gryphon, Jabberwocky, Mock Turtle, Cheshire Cat and of course the White Rabbit, all featured in our Non Fiction report. Our paragraphs have become more descriptive and we have learned how to start sentences in different ways using different adverbs and cohesive devices. Our vocabulary has develop too! We have spent a lot of time writing stories this year, so we really looked forward to creating our final masterpieces. We decided that Alice had not had enough fun in Wonderland and was up for a sequel! After writing our creations we produced story posters and then we went and read them to the children in Nursery. They loved it… and we did too!
PE
The summer has been perfect weather for practising our cricketing skills. We learned how to catch and throw making our fielding skills even better than before. We had the best time putting our skills in to games such as Rocket and Quick Cricket. Definitely a sport for the summer! Of course it was Sports Day, so we put in a lot of effort practising our sprinting and hurdling. Cricket and Athletics to end the year – perfect!
Science
Forces was the focus of our learning in Science this term. After starting off our topic shooting balloons across the classroom, we discovered how gravity, friction of forward thrust affect how far our balloons travelled. We then switched our attention to Magnetism. Opposites attract and the same repel – we had a lot of fun moving our magnets around! Did you know that not all metals are magnetic? It is infact the iron in metals that make lots of objects attract to magnets. Magnets can even help us find our direction. We made our own compasses out of leaves, needles, water and the magnetic North – now we can find our way out of forest if we are lost! We ended our learning by shooting cars down ramps covered in different materials, finding out that the rougher the surface the slower the speed and the smoother the surface, the faster the speed. We even put our Maths in action, creating bar charts to present our results.
Maths
This time around, we learned how to tell the time using analogue and digital building on our learning from Year 2. We sorted and classified 2D shapes depending on their properties such as parallel and perpendicular lines and then we made our own 3D shapes, counting their faces, sides and vertices. We had lots of fun programming Bee Bots to find our way around mazes and turning clockwise and anti clockwise. Finally, we refined our data presentation skills, reading pictograms and bar charts. We collected our own data, presented the results and created our own bar charts. Of course we kept practising our times tables skills so we could improve our scores for Freddo Friday!
